Portable air conditioners are expensive, even ones with relatively modest cooling power. It’s therefore no surprise that many people are drawn to units at the higher end of the BTU range. However, there are many features of portable air conditioners that are relevant to the unit’s overall value.

Take for example the SPT WA-1420E: 14,000BTU Portable Air Conditioner.

The SPT WA-1420E has impressive specifications. First off, it delivers 14,000 BTUs, making it capable of easily covering a 600 square foot room. Moreover, it comes with key features we look for in higher-end portable air conditioners; this includes eco-friendly refrigerants; a washable air filter; a good vent kit; three fan speed settings; a 24 hour programmable timer; adjustable air flow; a 1.4 liter/hour dehumidifying function; and a good electronic digital thermostat and a remote control. Also important is it’s quiet operation – this unit generates only 49 decibels of sound on the low setting (55.2 dB on high). This is very good, and is something you’ll appreciate if you need to use this model in your bedroom.

Notably, all of these features and cooling power come in a unit that is currently selling for about $450. This is very reasonable for a portable AC that comes with this many BTUs. Indeed, the only other model that comes close to this price at this moment is the 14,000 BTU Koldfront PAC1401W.

However, while the SPT WA-1420E is roughly equivalent in price to the Koldfront PAC1401W, it’s not nearly as efficient. Specifically, the Energy Efficiency Ratio (“EER”) of the WA-1420E, which is a product of its BTUs divided by its wattage, is 8.9. This is not very good, as we like to see air conditioners with an EER of close to or over 10.0. The Koldfront PAC1401W, in contrast, has a much better EER of 9.5 – this means that it is significantly more efficient than the SPT, which is likely to result in substantial cost savings over the life of the unit.

Overall, notwithstanding its relatively uninspiring energy efficiency, the SPT WA-1420E 14,000BTU Portable Air Conditioner is still a solid unit that is reasonably priced and comes with a good set of modern features. But if you want a similar model that may cost you less to operate in the long run, they you may want to consider the Koldfront PAC1401W as well.
