At first blush, the Philips Saeco HD8327/47 Poemia Top Espresso Machine seems to have a lot going for it at an unbelievable price for a pump espresso maker. But is this thing for real? To see what we think about this espresso machine by Philips, please keep reading.

Pump-type espresso machines are widely known producing the best-testing espresso. This in part due to the greater speed at which water is passed through the grounds with pump units, thanks to their much greater water (“bar”) pressure. Further, because they don’t rely on pressure generated by steam, these units can extract espresso using water at a more optimal lower temperature.

The biggest downside of pump machines, however, is their significantly higher cost. Consequently, it’s rare to find what many would consider an inexpensive pump maker. This is why the Philips Saeco HD8327/47 Poemia Top Espresso Machine is among the new models to catch our attention.

Currently selling for around $180, there is no denying that the HD8327/47 Poemia is affordable for a pump maker, but is this too good to be true?

On the outside, it definitely cuts the mustard alright, with a sharp, stainless steel finish and clean design, along with indicator lighting, a Pannarello steam wand, and removable drip tray and water tank.

As far as its brewing technology, it also seems to cover the bases well. The HD8327/47 Poemia uses a pump that creates an impressive 15-bar’ worth of pressure – which is very good for espresso extraction – along with a stainless steel boiler and pressurized filter that can be used not only with ground coffee, but also prepackaged espresso shots too.

Further, espresso taste and strength can be adjusted via a convenient front dial control, and the frothing wand is straightforward and easy to use. As an added perk, this unit comes with a top-vent that allows you to preheat your cups/glasses to minimize temperature loss during extraction.

While this all sounds great, how does this maker actually perform during routine use? Well, user satisfaction ratings are mixed. It appears that the HD8327/47 Poemia scores well in the most importantly respects, that is, on maintaining optimal extraction temperatures and producing great taste with decent crema. However, many users complain about its design quality and reliability, with several comments that the unit was defective upon arrival, seemed flimsy, or is awkward to use.

In our view, notwithstanding some of the harsher criticisms, the Philips Saeco HD8327/47 Poemia Top Espresso Machine is a pretty good machine for its low price point, especially for first-time pump users who are likely to be more forgiving and patient with its quirks. However, if you are looking for a more sophisticated and well-made entry-level option that is still very affordable but has a bit more of a learning curve, we suggest the KRUPS XP601050 Manual Pump Espresso Machine.
