Backyard composting is a fantastic way to improve your garden and make good use of green waste. Compost is one of the best ways to add organic matter to your soil, which not only adds precious nitrogen to your garden – without the use of synthetic fertilizers – but also improves its moisture-holding capacity and reduces compaction in soils that have a high clay content.
Moreover, composting teaches a valuable lesson to everyone in the household about how to avoid waste and live more sustainably.
While you do not need to use a pre-made composter, they do offer significant advantages beyond just keeping wildlife and prying little hands outside of the pile, especially a good one like the Good Ideas CW-2X Compost Wizard Dueling Tumbler.
The Good Ideas CW-2X uses a standard rotating drum design like many other types, but has a couple twists. Rather than having a single rotating drum, it has two independent 25-gallon-each compartments that can compost independently of one another. This is very helpful, as you can separate batches that are nearly finished from those where you are introducing fresh, new green material. As a result, it helps properly stagger your composting so that earlier batches can be used first.
In addition, it comes with a base that collects and stores “compost tea,” which is nothing more than the tea-colored liquid resulting from degrading plant matter. This stuff is pure gold for garden or container plants, and is ideal for misting down epiphytes, like orchids. However, if it’s very dark, you may want to dilute it down somewhat as this liquid can be quite acidic.
The CW-2X is also ruggedly-built. It’s composed of recycled polyethylene that is not only durable, but safe enough to eat off of. In fact, it’s BPA free and approved for contact with foods according to the FDA. Consequently, you don’t have to worry about the dog getting into this compost pile, nor fear for its safety if it gnaws on the drums out of curiosity.
To use this composter, all you need to do is fill it, periodically drain off the “tea,” and keep it in a warm spot, such as in full sun in cool climates and in partial shade in hotter ones.
Overall, we are big fans of the Good Ideas CW-2X Compost Wizard Dueling Tumbler – it has a good capacity for light composting; it uses a clever dual-drum design; it facilitates easy collection of compost tea; and it’s well built and composed of food-grade plastic. Furthermore, it’s relatively affordable compared to other composters with a similar capacity. What’s not to like?
