DuroStar DS4400EHF Hybrid – Key Specifications

Duel Fuel Portable Generator

The big sell of this and other hybrid gen sets is their ability to run on either gas or propane. While gas is commonly available, there is a lot to like about propane. It burns cleaner, comes in convenient storage tanks, and unlike gas, which has a very limited shelf life, liquid propane can retain its potency for years, making it an ideal fuel to keep on hand for unexpected emergency situations. The DuroStar DS4400EHF comes with a flexi-line connection that allows you to easily use propane tanks of various sizes.

Power Output & Engine Displacement

DuroStar DS4400EHF Hybrid - dual fuel capabilityThe DuroStar DS4400EHF Hybrid produces a maximum of 4,400 surge watts and 3,500 running watts. This is enough power to keep several large appliances running during outages or operate a few high-draw power tools or large room air conditioners. It’s also a great option for recreating, and this should turn over even larger RV AC units.

This model is fitted with a 196cc, 7 horsepower, air cooled engine that uses a cast iron sleeve and steel ball bearings for enhanced performance and longevity. It also comes with a spark-arrestor to help prevent fires, and a low oil shutoff to protect against accidental dry-running. Notably, this generator is equipped with a very convenient idle control system. This allows the generator to maintain a relatively constant RPM despite fluctuating load, which is great for conserving fuel and suppressing engine noise.

The motor has an Electric Key and Pull Start mechanism.

Runtime

The 4-gallon gas tank provides an approximate runtime of 8 hours when operated at 50% of maximum load. However, the unit is rated to run for 20 hours on liquid propane, depending on load.

While moderately-sized as far as portable generators go, the DuroStar DS4400EHF Hybrid comes with a robust power panel that includes a volt meter, circuit breaker, and several outlets –  specifically, (2) 120V/20 A 3-prong outlets and (1) 120V / 30A twist lock outlet.

EPA/CARB-Approved

For Californians and those looking to use this portable generator when recreating, the good news is that this model is both EPA & CARB ( aka “California Air Resources Board”) approved.

Noise Levels

One of the biggest complaints when it comes to portable generators is operating noise. However, the DuroStar DS4400EHF Hybrid is very quiet for a conventional generator, producing only 69 decibels of sound (roughly equivalent to low human conversation). This is also great news for campers or anyone looking to run this gennie without causing a disturbance.

Dimensions/Weight

When you factor in the tubular steel wheel kit, the entire unit measures 36 inches long, by 21 inches wide and 24 inches high. This makes the Durostar a very compact and truly portable model. Careful though, it is still fairly heavy, weighing in at approximately 140 pounds without fuel.

Price and Value

DuroStar DS4400EHF Hybrid - a highly versatile portable generatorCurrently selling for about $600, we think the DuroStar DS4400EHF is priced very competitively compared to other portable generators that produce similar wattage. But the DuroStar is an even a better deal when you consider that it can operate using either gas or propane. This duel-fuel ability always comes with a slightly higher price tag compared to conventional gas-only generators.

DuroStar DS4400EHF Hybrid – Concluding Thoughts

Having the option to use gas or propane is a very desirable feature that ordinarily commands high prices. However, the DuroStar DS4400EHF Fortress Hybrid Portable Dual Fuel Portable generator is reasonably priced, and on par with other conventional gas generators with similar power. In addition, it has a very low operating noise level, uses a durable cast-iron sleeved engine, and has a full power panel to boot. In short, we think this is an outstanding new hybrid fuel generator that is excellent for those looking for backup power during emergencies or as a clean-burning power source when recreating.
