Best Electric Lawn Mower for 2015: Our Picks

The great news is that electric lawn mowers are now widely available and come in a range of makes and models to chose from. The bad news is that the sheer volume of models on the market  can make it difficult to locate the best one for you.  We’ve been reviewing electric models for quite a long time now, and would like to help separate the wheat from the chaff by sharing what we think are the best of the best electric lawn mowers – both corded and cordless – for 2015.

Best cordless electric mowers

Cordless mowers have been all the rage for some time now; however, we are seeing manufacturers still jockeying for competitive edges in two respects relevant to consumers: (1) run time; and (2) power. This makes sense of course since both goals are in tension – more powerful motors command more advanced battery technologies. Here are the two models that we like for 2015:

1) Sun Joe iON 40V Cordless iON16LM 16-Inch Lawn Mower

Sun Joe iON 40V Cordless iON16LM Best Electric Lawn Mower for 2015You may not have heard of Sun Joe, but we can assure you that the Sun Joe iON is no joke!

This a state-of-the-art electric lawn mower that leverages a high-quality rechargeable 40 V EcoSharp lithium-ion battery and high-performance “brushless” motor to deliver outstanding cutting power on top of a 40-minute industry-leading run time! This makes the Sun Joe very hard to beat.

In addition, the model comes with a fully array of discharge/deck adjustment options and a respectable 9.25-gallon rear catch-bag to make use of its extended run time.

2) Black & Decker CM1640 40-volt MAX lithium-ion Mower

Black & Decker CM1640 cordless lawn mowerThe Black & Decker CM1640 16-Inch Cordless Mower fell into the second spot, but only because it has a slightly shorter, 30-minute run time compared to the Sun Joe.

In fact, if you are not concerned much with finishing the lawn within 30 minutes, then it’s a toss up. Both the Black & Decker and Sun Joe match up almost identically in terms of voltage, features and cutting bag capacity. But the Black & Decker definitely has a more established track record, we suspect due to its greater brand-recognition

However, the Sun Joe has a more advanced brushless motor, and keep in mind that for the Black & Decker you will need to use both of the batteries (which are included with your purchase) to get that full 30-minute run time.

Best corded electric mowers

Because they don’t carry their power sources with them, corded electric mowers are cheaper to make and cheaper to buy, making them a particularly cost-effective choice for those who are more tolerant of dealing with long power cords, which can sometimes get cut inadvertently along with your grass. This is a very tight market, but we managed to pick our top two corded models for 2015, which are as follows.

1) GreenWorks 25112 13 Amp 21-Inch Lawn Mower

GreenWorks 25112The GreenWorks 25112 has nailed our top position for 2015 for a variety of reasons, including its gutsy, 13-amp electrical motor, generous 21-inch cutting deck with 7 height settings, and brutally efficient grass-cutting prowess.

In addition for those so-inclined, this is also a well-established “green” organization committed to a “Zero-Carbon Footprint.” Yet the company most impresses us in terms of their capable customer support team and philosophy of standing behind their products. But hey, you don’t need to care about the environment to appreciate its value, and you certainly don’t need to take our word for GreenWork’s reputation:  the 25112 has an undeniable 5-star following with scores of happy and loyal followers.

2) Sun Joe Mow Joe MJ407E Electric Lawn Mower

Sun Joe Mow Joe MJ407ESun Joe again makes our “best of” list – this time with the MJ407E i – another outstanding electric mower that we are confident would meet or exceed most users’ expectations.

This is a real dynamo that can handle yards up to an acre in size and this model too comes with a sturdy deck featuring 7-height adjustment increments and a large, 15-gallon capacity rear catch-bag. This model also screams quality throughout and receives predominantly 5-star reviews from users. So why did we put it at #2? The decision came down to its 12-amp (versus the GreenWork’s 13-amp) motor and slightly smaller 20-inch (versus the GreenWork’s 21-inch) wide cutting deck.

To be fair, these are pretty arbitrary criteria and both of these models are highly recommended.
